ISO/DIS 23507: Information Preparation to Enable Long-Term Use
Status: Under Development
ISO/DIS 23507, titled Information Preparation to Enable Long-Term Use, is currently in the enquiry phase with ISO members. This Draft International Standard (DIS) builds upon best practices and frameworks for ensuring digital information remains usable and accessible over the long term.
The standard aligns with the widely adopted ISO 14721:2012, commonly known as the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model. OAIS provides a framework for preserving digital information and is used across diverse sectors, including cultural heritage, research, government, and private industries, to guide effective digital preservation efforts.
Developed in Collaboration with CCSDS
This standard has been developed in collaboration with a Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) Recommended Practice. While CCSDS practices were originally intended for space mission data, their underlying principles have broader applicability for the digital preservation of high-value information across multiple sectors.
CCSDS issues two types of recommendations:
o Recommended Standards: Prescriptive documents that define how infrastructure elements operate and interoperate.
o Recommended Practices: Descriptive guidance providing advice on addressing specific challenges. These are non-binding and serve as general best practices.

Broader Impact
By incorporating elements of CCSDS practices and aligning with OAIS, ISO/DIS 23507 aims to provide adaptable, sector-neutral guidance on preparing digital information for long-term usability. The standard emphasizes best practices that can be tailored to meet the unique needs of various industries while addressing the challenges of maintaining accessibility and usability in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
